Let me just say it was awesome! And honestly it was exactly what I needed to hear.

If you like to read or just want something that will make you feel truly blessed.

Read it!

This book will explain God's grace in an amazingly simple way that even I could understand. We all like receiving it but we don't always give it out as freely as we should. Of course I am speaking of myself.

I have been going through it like crazy trying to find somethings that I think everyone in the house will like.

But even better, I got this.

This is the key to knowing exactly what to but when you go to the store. I love it, she gives substitutes for different foods and it really makes eating healthy doable.

I can't believe you are 17!

Really?

Has it been 17 years since we brought that sweet little curly haired girl home from the hospital?

It really doesn't seem like you should be that old.

So, just for the fun of it, here are 17 things that I love about you.

1. Your honesty. (Sometimes that can get us into trouble but I love that about you.)
2. Your a self motivator, and while at 17 you may not think much of that but it will come in handy and you get older.
3. You are not afraid to try new things. This too will come in handy later on.
4. Even at 17, you still like to hang out with your family. Maybe not all the time, but I think you still enjoy our company.
5. You are compassionate to others. It is a wonderful quality to have.
6. I love your hair. At your age I paid good money for hair like that.

1st Project of 2012

I haven't been able to blog lately because I left my camera at my mother-in-laws house over Christmas.

I know that I could have blogged anyway and I did, but I really wanted to get my camera back so I could show you this.

Isn't it awesome?

And I didn't even do it.

Baby boy did it all by himself, he was kind enough to let me hang it in the living room.

I had to move some pictures around but I really like how it ended up. So, while it wasn't mine it does hang in my house so even though I didn't technically make it I am calling it because it's in my house.

Besides, I gave him credit.

Yesterday, I had my annual physical.

Yea, fun right?

I'd like to say it was pretty uneventful and in some ways it really was, but in one way it was hysterical.

I have to say, is there no one out there who can design a better paper gown?

Honestly, I think I could come up with something better than they have now, and I know nothing about designing.

This is the lovely gown we get now. It is about as thin as toilet paper.

No kidding, the top half is like a shirt with a slit down the front and it barely covers your belly.

Couldn't they at least make it a little longer? Then they give you a blanket to wrap around your bottom half made of the same toilet paper.

I tried to adjust it and I ended up with about 4 rips before the Dr. actually came in. I couldn't help but laugh at myself at how I was trying to "cover myself" with this flimsy little thing.

Thank heaven's he was running behind. It gave me a few minutes to compose myself.

While I was laying there I was thinking someone should come up with a better design for these things, they could probably make a million dollars.

While searching for the kind I was given I found one kind of like I was thinking.

Traditions

I love Christmas!

For the most part I love the traditions that go along with the holidays.

Some of which we have been doing for as long as I can remember, and some our family started on our own.

Like getting our Christmas tree, we have been doing it since our kids were small, and even though they think they are grown up, we still do it and I think I love it more than they do sometimes.

I remember when we were little our Christmas was going to my Grandmother Phillips on Christmas eve, where we always ate, read the Christmas story from Luke, then we got to open our presents. Believe it or not it was a sort of right of passage to get to read the Christmas story and my Grandma's.

Then we would leave there and go to a few other places, my aunt had a barn (more like a garage really with a live in suite on top), and she always had people over on Christmas eve, and us little kids got presents. Hee Hee!!!!

One year all of us cousins got plastic ski's and it snowed! You wouldn't believe the fun we had with those plastic ski's!

Oh, to be young again!

Christmas Day was spent at home until the early afternoon, then we went to my Grandma Lamb's house. More of the same, good food, good fun, and lots and lots of special memories.

Those are the things you remember, the people, the places you gather, all the things that make up special memories!

Today I heard on the radio that there are only 13 days till Christmas.

Really?

I feel like this year everything has just kind of snuck up on me, but even though I didn't realize how close it really was to being here, I have gotten most of my shopping done.

I actually love to do as much of it as I can online. I would rather be able to sit around in my PJ's and order something than have to go out and fight the crowds, or get to the store only to find that they don't have what I'm looking for. So, for that reason I did probably 75% of my shopping online.

The other 25% I went into the store and actually had face to face contact with the store personnel. And it wasn't so bad.

I took my mom to get her stuff, and she had none by the way, but she managed to get absolutely everything that she needed.

It was awesome! She was exhausted, but extremely relieved to be done.

Now, we have to get her tree put up.

We'll do that tomorrow.

Tree Trip

This past weekend, we set out to get our Christmas tree, and this year we decided to go somewhere different.

We headed to Lake Lure.

It was amazing, we had perfect weather, and we hiked, and we just had a ball!!

And while the whole purpose of the trip was to get our Christmas tree, we got that on the way home. We picked out a really nice tree, it was about 8 feet tall and it cost us all of $36.

Yes, I said $36.

That's one of the reasons we get our trees from a choose and cut farm.

It is fresher, and it is usually cheaper. Now, I do remember buying a tree for $25, but it was bought sight unseen, and it ended up being about 4 foot tall.

No kidding!

So we don't do that any more.

With Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow, I thought I would put together my own list of the Top ten things I am Thankful for.

For the record, most of them aren't things at all.

10. I am thankful for my family, as dysfunctional as we may be sometimes, I am so, so thankful!

9. My church family. Everyone, and I mean everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, has touched me in some way.

8. My health, and more importantly my family's health. (We aren't perfect, but we manage.)

7. I am so thankful that my mom is at home, last year was horrible for us while she was sick, but this year has been much better.

6. I am thankful that I have learned to say No when I need to and yes when I want to.

5. I am thankful that I have learned what is really important. And still learning more everyday.

4. I am thankful for my friends. I know that if I needed them I could count on them.

3. My job, and my coworkers. I am so fortunate to work with good people and for that I am truly grateful.

2. Hope. With life throwing us curve balls, I am so, so, so thankful for hope.

Is this really part of the plan?

Last night in bible study, we are still tackling Genesis, which is just fascinating by the way. Anyway, as life would have it we were all presenting our prayer requests and we received some bad news about one of our members.

Just one question, why does it seem like bad stuff just keeps on happening. Doesn't the devil take a break for heaven's sake?

So after we pray, we get started on our studying part and also as life would have it, we were at the section where Jacob is getting blessed by his father, but his father thinks he is Esau.

Confusing isn't it.

But let's not put all of the blame on Jacob, while he is sneaky, his mother pretty much tells him what to do and he does it!

So Esau is pretty upset, because since Isaac was tricked into giving his blessing to Jacob there is no blessing for him. Back in the day, the blessing meant everything.

This is the part where we could start talking about how "the spoken word" has so much power, but I want to save that for another day.

So since Rebekah knows how angry Esau is, she comes up with yet another plan to get Jacob to safety. While he is on his journey he has a dream. In it he see's a stairway to heaven with Angels going up and down the stairway. God tells him that he is the Lord, God of Abraham and Isaac, and he tells him how he is going to bless him and be with him always.

When Jacob wakes up he is afraid, as he should be, God did just talk to him.

Jacob anoints a rock and prays, and his prayer is somewhat of a bargaining prayer that if God will be with him on his journey, and deliver him safely back home, then he will let him be his God.

Did you get the key points there, the if and then.

The whole point of me telling the long story was to get to the prayer by the way, but I just thought it was a really good story.

I have said before that I know I pray for the wrong things, and apparently thanks to Jacob, I am not alone. But what I was thinking about was how hard it is to really pray for the right things.

When someone is sick, we naturally want for them to be healed, so that is what we ask for, are we wrong in asking?

We want our kids and families to be happy and content, is it wrong to ask for those things?

I don't really think it's wrong to ask, I think God wants us to come to him with everything, but I guess where it gets hard is where we have to just completely let him be in control. And when we say, your will be done, we need to be accepting of what his will really is. We like to try to guide God with what we think should happen, or what we think is best, but we have to face the fact that we don't really know what is best for us.

He does.

And when I read about how Rebekah and Jacob didn't do what was right at the time, look at how that plan came together.

He does have a plan for us all, we just don't see the big picture, we only see bits and pieces. So when it seems like you are trying to do the right things and pray for all the right things, but we aren't getting anywhere, we have to remember, we aren't seeing the whole story. Maybe we are at the part where Esau feels betrayed and angry. Or Isaac is disappointed that he has been deceived. But when it starts coming together, and it will, we will see the big picture.

Anniversary Trip

For the last three years, Mr. Wonderful and I have made it a point to get away by ourselves to celebrate our anniversary.

We originally started it because we hadn't really taken a vacation without the kids and we thought why not do it for our anniversary.

As it turns out, we still like each other enough to keep doing it, so we are.

Last weekend we had some friends over to help us celebrate the final completion of the patio!

Chairs are all set up. Baby Boy made my adirondack chairs and we loooovvvve them! I have told him I want a loveseat made like that.

This weekend we lost one of our chickens, and since we only had one more laying hen left, we decided to move her to the barn.

I think I have mentioned before that in our Bible study we are doing Genesis.

Now, I have to admit when I first heard that was what we were doing, I wasn't really impressed. I imagine that's why I am just a simple layperson.

But once we started going through it, I have been amazed at how much I have gotten out of it. I really am impressed with how simple things are sometimes, yet we sometimes over analyze or maybe we just look right over it. Or maybe it's just me.

We are currently reading all about Abraham. Now, Abraham's character has some flaws, but one thing he does without wavering is he listens to what God tells him to do and he does it, no questions asked.

WOW!!!

We were discussing how when God told Abraham to take Isaac to the mountain and sacrifice him, he goes. That simple, he just goes! While I can't imagine what must have been going through his head while he was going. He never questioned the reasoning of why God asked him to do what he was doing, he only did as he was told.

What obedience. I have said that there were times when I wish that God spoke to us in audible voices so that we would know that it was truly him. But I have to wonder, would I be as obedient as Abraham? Have you ever felt like God was trying to get your attention but we dismissed it to our imagination, or just tell ourselves that we are reading too much into it. Maybe we or I should be more aware of when those feelings come over me. Maybe, just maybe, I don't "hear" because I don't want to.

What seems like blind obedience to me, is just natural for Abraham. While he wasn't perfect, he was completely and totally committed to the purpose God gave him. What is amazing also is that he didn't even know what God had planned for him, he only knew to go where he said and to just trust him.

Sounds simple doesn't it?

But is it? Do we trust God completely?

With every aspect of our lives?
Our finances?
Our jobs? Or lack of jobs?
Our health?

What seems so simple can be so hard for us can't it.

What is harder about asking ourselves if we are being obedient, the question or the answer.

Conversation with teenage drivers

This week our daughter is taking a friend's children to school so we were having a conversation in the car with her about how she really needed to be careful with other kids in the car.

I personally think she is a pretty darn good teenage driver, but then I am biased I suppose.
I have to say, the man tends to get uptight while riding with baby girl and he doesn't know when to let something just go. If you know what I mean.

Anyway, we were riding in the car and here was the conversation.

Man: "You need to stop playing with the radio and pay attention to the cars in front of you."

Baby Girl: "I am paying attention, you do it all the time, you even talk on your phone."

Man: "Did you ever hear that most accidents happen because you aren't paying attention."

BG: "No, but I think I did hear something about cell phones causing accidents."

Please know that at this point I had to interject and tell the kids to stop arguing. Really, sometimes they argue like a bunch of babies. I had to give her credit for the comeback though, that was a pretty good one. But the man didn't really see the humor in it.

Just an ordinary day

Yesterday, Baby girl had a cross country meet about 45 minutes away.

And just so you know, it rained most of the day yesterday.

So, they all got pretty wet, and muddy!

We did a lot of shoveling!!

until finally, after 3 loads of rock dust and too many trips to Lowe's to count, we are finally finished.

Crazy busy, but productive

This weekend, we worked our tails off trying to get our patio done.

I shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled some more. Then we ran out of rock dust.

Mr. Wonderful already has another load on the way, we are determined to finish it by the weekend.

I know, it's not that big a deal if you've seen her before but I hadn't. Not in person, I mean.
But it was fantastic!

She was so funny, and she even had a message in her madness. With life being so stressful sometimes, it is great to be able to find humor in the everyday things we deal with.

Encouraging words

This year my daughter has decided to give Cross Country a try at school.

She is pretty athletic so I try to encourage her to give 100 % to whatever sport she happens to be playing at the time.

But this sport is different, well I should say it is different from the other sports she has done.

She has a great relationship with her coaches, and her teammates seem to make a point of cheering each other on instead of beating each other down. This isn't to say her other sports were bad experiences because they weren't, everything she does, she genuinely likes to do. It's just that this group of kids and coaches have been so encouraging.

I overheard some girls talking about how much better they feel if the coaches encourage them with kindness instead of yelling at them about what they are doing wrong or could even do better.

While everyone wants to succeed, isn't it nice sometimes to just do something because it's fun. What happen to that in sports? Everything seems to be so competitive. Kids should not be stressed about sports. It is suppose to be fun. Remember fun?

I remember when we went for her physical and the Dr. asked her what sport she was doing. When she said Cross country, the Dr. said how she loved Cross Country because there was such a camaraderie with the kids who ran. They seemed to encourage each other, really build each other up.

What a difference words can make.

They have the power to build us up or knock us down.

I decided to give making my own clothes detergent a try, I have to say bloggers make everything look so easy.

And they were right it really was easy.

I used this recipe.

Powdered Laundry Detergent

2 cups Fels Naptha Soap (finely grated – I used Octagon, basically the same thing)

1 cup Washing Soda

1 cup Borax

■Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.

■Use 2 tablespoons per full load.

I was a little skeptical at first. But I have to say, I couldn't tell any difference in how it cleans my clothes, and I actually like the smell of the soap a little better than any powder detergents I've used.

I am getting use to using powder again because I was using liquid but other than that I am completely satisfied.

I will say that the recipe above didn't last very long so I have since doubled it and because I didn't want to stand over the grater for so long, I decided to try to put the soap in the blender to shred it up.

It stuck at first, but then I learned that if I add some dry ingredients (like the Washing soda) it worked fine.

I never ceased to be amazed at what I learn from blogging.

First, lets talk reality shows.

I have admitted my weakness for Jersey Shore, so that's old news. But Baby Girl is into several reality shows.

One of which is Keeping up with the Kardashians. You know Bruce Jenner's family, Khloe and Lamar, and now Kris and Kim, and lets not forget Scott and Kourtney. There are others, that is only a few of the sisters.

Let me just say, when I think my life is dysfunctional, just cut on the Kardishians. Really starts putting things in perspective.

She also really likes those teen mom shows. There are days when I watch an episode with her, just to stress the importance of abstinence, and I can't believe how people act. When I get like that I start telling her what I don't like about those people on the show and she gets mad and tells me to leave the room. Which I don't by the way, so she will usually get mad and leave the room herself.

You know what that means, right.

I get the remote! HA!

On another note, we had quite a bit of rain, so once again, the patio is stalled.

Really getting tired of waiting for the planets to align so we can finish it, but whatever.

After Mr. Wonderful got back from his fishing trip, he has not stopped talking about going back. Yea, that means the patio again must wait. I tried to throw some husband guilt his way, but he was way too focused to pay attention to it.

It is Friday, so that is really good news!!

It has been pretty busy around the house with everyone getting back to school and a normal schedule, so I am looking forward to resting.

Thoughts on Thankfulness

This weekend we ended the summer with one last hoorah at the river.

We were very fortunate in the fact that while we had tree's down, no major structural damage, and we didn't have any water damage.

We saw so much water damage. Sooo much, people had to replace duct work, flooring, and much of their furniture. All of which was sitting in the streets.

We didn't get power until Sunday night, but again we were fortunate.

I am thankful.

Thankful, for generators, so that we were able to clean up in some minimal comfort.

Unfortunately, there are counties down east that don't have a lot of income, and therefore, they will need a lot of help getting things back to the way they were. While we were outside the Red Cross van came by offering us food and drinks. While we didn't need any, I know there are people in our area that do.

There is a man who comes by our house and always asks for our cans. (He collects them for money.) While he was there he was telling us about the damage to his house from the hurricane.

He asked my husband if we knew the neighbor across the street. He said "Yes, I know Luke."

He said "He must be rich, he lets me go through his trash."

When he came in and told us that, I almost cried.

We are blessed.

So, he got our cans and anything else we could find around the house.

This was a community playground with a bathhouse.

All that's left is a pile of rubble where the bathhouse was and the basketball goal. The bird house actually made it too.

There were lots of picnic tables for enjoying the view, but they were washed away.

But we did manage to find time to have some fun.

The water was amazing on Sunday, AMAZING!!!!

So we took the boat to Oriental, and did a little fishing.

We weren't the only ones who decided to go fishing.

But I bet they weren't trying to get one of these.

Look at that!!!

It's a drum, and they put up quite a fight getting them in. They were kind of pretty too. They make a drum noise when you take them out of the water.

Don't worry, it was a catch and release. We were fishing for a citation size drum, and we got it!!!!

Well, I didn't really care about the fishing part, I just like being on the boat and enjoying the views.

It was a good way to end the summer.

We aren't waterfront, so we are more worried about tree or wind damage.

Baby Girl is running Cross Country at school this year, and while she has always been a runner. Running long distances is beginning to take a toll on her chins. So I thought we would get new shoes.

New Read!

We've started reading a new book in our Sunday School class.

This one is really, really good, and it's not really a christian book although it is used by a lot of churches. It is all about how to deal with conflict.

After reading only a few chapters I have to say this is a book everyone needs to read.

We all deal with conflict, whether it's at our work place or at home. We all have it. It's basically just a fact of life.

You might want to check it out.

It certainly couldn't hurt.

Why I love blogs

I was thinking the other day about the very first blog that I ever read.

It was THIS! (She is so funny!)

I didn't even know what a blog was, and it's amazing to me how easy it is to tell your story to a computer, when you may be apprehensive to share with people.

What I loved about her blog was how honest she was about everything that she was going through, and I loved that in the midst of it, she told her stories in ways that made me laugh till I cried.

Humor, can help you through almost anything. And while she was writing as a coping mechanism for what she was going through, she has no idea how much her humor probably helps so many other people.

So to begin with, that is what brought me to blogs, from there I found so many other blogs that I have loved.

These were some of my first blogs that I read faithfully, some I still do.

That's a few, there were more but these are so open and honest, I just was amazed at how reading something someone writes can make you feel a connection with them, even if you've never met them you feel like you know them.

Then, I found, crafty blogs and DIY blogs, and I was amazed at what some people can see when they look at "stuff" nobody else would want.

I learn something every day from blogs.

Today, I actually learned about bidets.

I know, it was a funny story that i don't think I should share just yet. I will save that one for another time.

One thing I've learned is that no matter what you are going through, you are not alone.

Sometimes, that is good to know.

So, we are slowly coming along but because we made some changes to the size, and we are not really on an ideal slope, the process for the patio is taking a little longer.

Also, we do have jobs and stuff we have already planned, like vacation, so we know it won't be a quick fix.

But don't worry! (I know you were)

It will get completed.

Plus, it has been super hot here!

This weekend my friend married her "Prince", after the vows she sang him a song.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house!

I don't know when I have seen a more beautiful wedding, it was perfect for those two beautiful people.

Pillows made easy

This is what my couch looks like,

Great huh?

I was looking around trying to figure out how to add some color, on the cheap.

Then I remembered I had some material left over from when I did this.

So I just got out the old sewing machine, and made the easiest pillows ever.

I just cut the material the size of the old pillows and stuffed them in.

I used the glue gun to finish them off, just folded over the excess material and glued it shut.

It's kind of envelope shaped.

Pretty cute, if I do say so myself, and it didn't cost me one dime.

Summer Goals

1. Make a patio under the deck.

3. Take some time just for me.

Last summer was so hectic and just plain crazy, so this summer I am

definitely going to do some relaxing.

Well, that's it, I know it's not really much of a list but I want to make sure I really get them done. So this way, the pressure isn't so great.

These are a few mirrors I picked up at our Free Yard sale.

Just a cute little mirror, it's only about 5 X 7, it looks larger in this picture.

And then there was this one that I got for Baby Girls room.

I really like this one, just needs a little paint to brighten it up.

We caught one!!!!

We made it back, and we actually caught a catfish when we went noodling.

You start out with a yellow (or color noodle of choice) noodle and you bait the hook and just throw it in the water.

You know there is something on the hook because the noodle will bob around. They have something in them to keep them on top of the water. These have PVC pipe I think.

Anyway, you leave them a while then go back and hope you have something.

Look at Mr. Wonderful, he was having so much fun, he couldn't wait to see what was on the hook.

And if you are lucky, you will have a catfish on the hook. This one was about 3-4 lbs. And it was also the only one we caught out of 9 noodles. But when we were fishing, Mr. Wonderful caught a really nice one.

All in all, it was a good weekend.

Painting, again!

A few weeks ago, I took off to the Goodwill store looking for that special something.

A bench.

But instead I came home with one of those wooden bowls that you see everywhere and super smart bloggers everywhere paint them and make them look awesome.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a before picture because I really didn't think it would be anything special, and I wanted to try the layering of the paint and if it didn't turn out right then it wouldn't matter anyway, right.

But I absolutely love how it turned out!!

She looks dreamy, and now she sits by the door holding our keys.

I moved her so she could be seen in the light, in all her glory.

Thankful on Tuesday

Do you ever have nights where you wake up and suddenly your mind is filled with a thousand different thoughts? Last night was one of those nights.

It seems like there is so much going on, sickness, job loss, financial struggles, just so much bad that we don't really focus on what is good.

So for today, I am going to be thankful.

One of the things that was running around in my head was how thankful I am for all the things my mom has taught me, so today she is my focus.

She taught me the importance of family.

I am eternally grateful for the way she took us to church, every Sunday, and she still is a constant source of faith to all of us.

She shows me how to find joy in everything. A sense of humor can get you through a lot people! She has always loved her kids unconditionally. Always!

Believe it or not, we are not as perfect as you may perceive us.

She instills family traditions, like yearly vacations with the WHOLE family, and getting together every week to eat as a family.

I am so thankful God chose her as my mother.

I know, I am truly blessed.

We are Family!!

This past weekend we had a cookout/party/shower/celebration for my nephew and his fiance. They live in Tennessee and we don't see them very often so while they were visiting we got ALL of the family together to congratulate the beautiful couple and celebrate with the whole family.

We had so much fun, the kids had a blast playing games.

Even the littlest one had a good time.

We had great food, but even better than that was the fellowship of family!

But the food was really good!

We are so blessed to have such a close family.

Farm house table

Well, it took a little longer than I had planned, and I still have some more to do on it, but at least it's far enough along to show you.

It started out as the kitchen table.

After I (baby boy and myself) took it apart, it looked like this.

Then, the carpenter elves took over and modified the Farm house table plans from Anna's site, so that I could use these legs.

And after a long weekend, it was finally coming together.

So, I primed, and painted, and stained.

Until it looked like this.

I still have to put another coat of stain and paint, then polyurethane.

But I love, love, love, love, love it!!!!!!

The color for lent is Purple, representing sorrow and repentance.

I liked the finish on this, but it has some splotches on it, so it is getting a makeover too.

I did go looking for my special buffet, but the one that I found was nice, but I just didn't LOVE it, so I decided I would be better off to wait for the perfect one.

But, don't worry, I have already told Mr. Wonderful that we are working on a project this week. (If I don't give him a time frame, things seem to get put off.)

I have been wanting a buffet for my dining room for a while now. We have had a huge hospice store that has recently opened and I have been by there searching for just the right one at just the right price.

I want to get something at a reasonable price, in case I mess it up.

I have seen so many great, great buffet makeovers on blogs that I am DYING to get started on one.

So this weekend I am on a mission, I am finding a buffet if it kills me.

Hmmm, I guess since it's for a teenage girl, maybe it was made so it didn't look like a bible, I don't really know if that's it or not but it kind of made me wonder.

Projects for 2011

I have already been talking to Mr. Wonderful about wanting to paint.

I want to paint my kitchen, living room and dining room. I would really like to do more but I know it won't get done so I'm thinking I may as well not even mention it.

I also want to work on my basement. I know, I said that last year and nothing. Believe it or not last year was pretty crazy for us, so that has something to do with it, but mostly we just kept putting it off. Oh, I have moved that furniture around more than once and I have organized, but we still have too much stuff, and we still have to do some upgrades.

I know that I want to paint the living room in a blue or blue gray.

Getting it together

I have seen so many bloggers telling all about how they have been getting organized. Seeing all the great things they are doing has been a real inspiration.

It has motivated me to re-organize everything.

Monday night I went to Wally world and bought some cheap baskets and came home to clean out my Tupperware cabinet.

I also did a little purging which always feels good, if I didn't use it in the last 6 months, it goes in the good will pile.

My only problem with that is that the pile usually ends up in my basement and stays there for a while.

Last night I came home and decided to clean out my makeup drawer. After I did that I went to my mom's to eat supper. (It's a weekly thing we do.) While I was at her house I was looking for some tongs and realized mom needs to do a little organizing too.

So, I have a feeling that this weekend will be spent cleaning out drawers, closets, and anything else I can get my hands on.

Do you make resolutions?

I have to say, some years I don't make any type of goals, or resolutions for myself at all. But this past year was such a whirlwind that I have decided to set some goals for myself.

Maybe if I write them out where everyone can see them I will feel a little more pressure to actually carry through.

So here goes.

I am going to give more in 2011. (Yes, I did take the Radical challenge!)

I want to make sure to set aside a certain amount of time for just me and my husband. That may sound corny, but I still have two teenagers at home and we really get very little time by ourselves.

I want to read through the entire bible in a year. (I don't have any kind of plan I am just winging it.)

I want to get rid of stuff I don't need. We have so much stuff that we honestly don't use, but I start to get rid of it then I think to myself this is still good. (It's a vicious cycle.)

Also, I am really going to try to tackle some projects. I need to paint, I want to get a new floor, but I want to do it on a budget. Not going to be easy, but anything is possible.

Winter Wonderland

Well, the weatherman finally got it right!

O Christmas Tree

While visiting my mom in the hospital, we were amazed at how they had the lobby decorated.

There are Christmas trees everywhere.

They are all decorated by different organizations and some are even auctioned off.

These are just a few.

I just LOVE this one, isn't the hat on top cute!

This one has a story, I'll come back to it.

OK, now for the story, you probably noticed the signs at the bottom of the trees. That just tells you the club/organization that the tree represents.

The purple one is for "Purple Grandma", she is a sweet lady who comes and visits the patients, she is always dressed in purple so she got the nickname Purple Grandma. We actually got to meet her one Saturday while we were visiting my mom. She used to go around to every room and visit all the patients but someone told her she couldn't do that anymore.

She told us the devil keeps trying to keep her out of there but she wouldn't let him. She still goes around to visit all that she can.

I wish I had gotten a picture of her.

What a lady!

Ohhh, I almost forgot, there are 58 trees in all, amazing!!!

Getting in the Christmas spirit!

It's been a while since I've posted, unfortunately my mom is in the hospital and it has been quite the ordeal, but I'll save that for another time.

But we were able to make our annual trip to Linville falls to get our Christmas tree.

Once again we stayed at Linville Falls Lodge, we've stayed here for about 5 years now and we absolutely love it.

And no trip is complete without eating at Famous Louise's Rockhouse.

Mmmmmm, Mmmmm, Good!!!!

Then we made our way to Sugar Plum Tree Farms.

How about this view? And we aren't even close to the top yet. This was about 1/4 of the way up and I said just pick one in this area, the hike was worse than you may think.

The tree's look a lot smaller on the side of a mountain than they do at home in your living room so we had to carefully select the perfect tree.

After much consideration, Mr. Wonderful is pretty picky about his tree, we made a choice!

Now we get to start cutting!!!

Baby boy did the cutting then we got to carry her down the hill.

Remember how steep that hill was, just take a look at that first picture.

Steep isn't it?

So we waited on the side of the hill for a tractor, so my boys wouldn't work themselves too hard.

After getting it home and getting it put up, here's how she looks now!

Now all we need are presents!

Radical, Final Chapter

You know how sometimes, you read something, it inspires you to really make changes and then you may start procrastinating about when you will actually begin with the changes.

I DON'T want that to happen after reading Radical! I have to say this has been a real roller coaster read, but I have really loved it! It has stepped on my toes, made me feel like a selfish self centered person, and just plain hurt my feelings. But not without showing me the way to make things right.

I don't feel like I have to change the world, I just have to start with making changes with myself.

I am so taking the challenge.!

I can pray for the entire world.

I can read through the entire word.

I can sacrifice my money for a specific purpose.

I can spend time in another context.

I can commit my life to a multiplying community.

While I know that I can do all of those things, I also know that doing them will take discipline and me really committing to making it happen.

I'm not sure which will be the most challenging for me. I think the first two will just be getting into a routine of doing them, the last three will be more challenging. But I am definitely doing them.

I have really enjoyed being a part of Marla's read a long!!

Radical, Chapter 8

Living when dyeing is gain.

WOW!!!

I am so in awe at the amazing stories of the people who choose to be radical. I mean amazed, I really don't know that I could do some of the things they do. To say that this makes me feel inadequate, once again, is putting it mildly.

I truly want what they have, I do. But I also think that there are a lot of things I can do in my own neighborhood to show God's love. Is that wrong? I don't think it is.

One of my favorite parts of this chapter was the story of the SS United States. I think that is what has happened to all of us. The church included. We are not using ourselves to our full capacity. We have become comfortable with just "being" a Christian and not living like Christians.

I know that the world doesn't revolve around me. And I have lost people and seen others come to Christ because of it. That is God! God is truly sovereign, and while I know this, I have forgotten just how sovereign he really is.

Because it is so true that nothing happens that he does not know about. He is truly in control.

This book has so changed my way of thinking!

I am beginning to look at this world through different eyes. We have become complacent.

It's becoming easier and easier to just show up and not really do anything.

Are we willing to obey the orders of Christ? Are we willing to be like him? Are we willing to risk our lives to go to great need and to great danger--whether it's in the inner cities around us, the difficult neighbor across the street, the disease ridden communities in Africa, or the hostile regions of the middle east?

The key is realizing--and believing--that this world is not your home.
